Indeed, studies show that drinking alcohol is less in vogue with younger millennials and Gen Z. Mounting concern around weight loss drugs GLP-1 drugs, which mimic the action of the glucagon-like peptide-1 hormone and stimulate insulin secretion after a meal, lower blood sugar and send feeling of fullness to the brain. What's more, GLP-1 drugs are an overwhelmingly American topic, with most Europeans unaware of them or unwilling to pay high prices. In total, GLP-1 users are only a very small slice of total alcohol consumers, said Spiros Malandrakis, lead alcohol industry researcher at Euromonitor International. The most vulnerable purveyors are those that are trailing the shift in consumption, notably domestic, non-premium beer brands.

Anheuser-Busch InBev is approaching a margins inflection point, supporting a stock rerating for the world's largest beer maker, according to Bank of America. The analyst added that the permanent profit hit, estimated to exceed $1 billion, from the Bud Light backlash in the U.S. this year is now part of the base case. Without the Bud Light issue, Pistacchi estimates Anheuser-Busch could have expanded its margins by more than 30 basis points above its current forecasts. U.S.-listed shares of AB InBev are down more than 10% this year as Bud Light sales took a hit. BUD YTD mountain BUD in 2023 —CNBC's Michael Bloom contributed to this report.

TD Cowen says Bud Light owner Anheuser-Busch InBev is a long-term growth story with strong margins and exceptional market share. The firm initiated coverage of the beverage stock with an outperform rating and a 63 euro per share price target on Thursday. Shares of the Bud Light owner stock have slipped nearly 5% from the start of the year. Analyst Vivien Azer says that while challenges in the U.S. have been well covered , the company is still the dominant global leader in beer with exceptional profit margins. "We believe ABI is capable of sustainable long-term MSD dividend growth and continued deleverage, driven by industry leading beer profit margins and strong free cash flow conversion," Azer said.

Bernstein said Bud Light volumes have further to fall, but is still optimistic on AB InBev's stock going forward. Analyst Trevor Stirling noted that the massive selloff in the stock stemming from customer backlash over the company's social media partnership with a transgender influencer was largely "overdone." Still, he said Bud Light volumes could continue to take a hit after already falling by roughly 30% in the U.S. in the second quarter. "We also assume that Bud Light volumes will take a permanent -15% haircut with an associated drag on operating leverage," the analyst said. Last month, HSBC downgraded Anheuser-Busch InBev stock over what the firm labeled a " Bud Light crisis ," and noted that the company could be contending with larger problems than it wants to admit.
